Antarctica does not have its own visa system or immigration authority. The Government of Canada states that all Canadian travellers require a permit to visit Antarctica, normally arranged by the expedition operator. Travellers may also need a passport and/or visa for the country they transit through on the way to and from Antarctica.

For Canadian Refugee Travel Document holders, the Antarctic sources do not specifically confirm whether a Canadian RTD is accepted. The applicable visa requirement therefore depends on the country used as the gateway or transit point, such as Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand. IAATO confirms that a visa is not required for Antarctica itself, but may be required for the country of departure.

Antarctic activities are also subject to authorization under the Antarctic Treaty System. National authorities of Antarctic Treaty Parties operate the permitting systems, and organized expedition operators generally handle the necessary arrangements.

Canadian RTD holders should confirm the RTD's acceptance and any visa requirement with the gateway/transit country before booking an Antarctic expedition. The expedition operator should also confirm that the required Antarctic permit or authorization has been obtained. If travelling through Argentina or Chile, the RTD holder should separately verify the entry and transit requirements of that country.
