Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark but is outside the EU and Schengen Area. A separate visa is required for Greenland where the traveller is visa-required. This visa is processed through the Danish visa system, but it is not a Schengen visa. A visa valid only for Denmark or the Schengen Area does not automatically permit entry to Greenland.

The Danish Consulate General in Toronto referred our inquiry to VFS Global for clarification. VFS confirmed that Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands use the same Visa Application Centre, but the application must specifically indicate travel to Greenland. The Danish authorities make the final visa decision, and the visa must specifically be valid for Greenland.

Canadian RTD holders who require a visa should apply through the Danish visa application process and specifically request a visa valid for Greenland. If travelling to Denmark/Schengen as well, the same application can include both, but the Greenland validity must be specifically indicated.
