The Consulate General of Guatemala in Vancouver confirmed by email that the Canadian Refugee Travel Document (RTD) is accepted for entry into Guatemala and that an RTD holder does not require a visa.

The Consulate also confirmed that if the traveller has a Canadian PR Card for more than three years, they do not require a visa. However, the Consulate states that an RTD holder does not require a visa based on their Canadian immigration status even while waiting for their PR Card. A Notice of Decision may therefore be used as supporting documentation of Canadian immigration status when the person holds a valid RTD.

The Consulate noted that, in some cases, airlines may ask travellers to obtain a visa from the Guatemalan Consulate, even though Guatemala accepts the Canadian RTD. The Consulate also indicated that airline decisions may vary depending on the traveller’s circumstances and the airline

Canadian Refugee Travel Document holders travelling to Guatemala should:

- Travel with a valid Canadian RTD.
- No Guatemalan visa is required according to the Consulate General of Guatemala in Vancouver.
- Carry their Canadian immigration status documentation, such as a PR Card or, where applicable, a Notice of Decision.
- Because the Consulate noted that airlines may sometimes request a visa despite Guatemala accepting the RTD, travellers should confirm the requirements with their airline before travelling.
