The Embassy of Nepal in Ottawa confirmed in writing that Canadian Travel Documents are accepted for visa applications. However, Canadian Travel Document holders cannot obtain a visa on arrival in Nepal and must apply for a visa through the Embassy before travelling.

The Embassy specifically requires Canadian travel document holders to apply under the “Refugee (as defined in Article 1)” category. The original travel document must have more than 6 months’ validity, and a sponsorship letter from a Nepali citizen living in Nepal, together with a copy of the sponsor’s Nepali citizenship certificate, is required. Processing takes at least 2 weeks.

The Embassy’s written response also confirms that Canadian Travel Documents are accepted for issuing the visa, but they are not accepted for direct entry without the required visa or for visa-on-arrival.

Canadian RTD holders should apply for a Nepal tourist visa through the Embassy of Nepal in Ottawa before travelling. Do not travel expecting visa-on-arrival eligibility. The Embassy recommends booking airline tickets only after the visa/ETA has been issued.
