The Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Ottawa confirmed by email that Slovakia accepts the Canadian Refugee Travel Document (RTD).

Slovakia is a member of both the European Union and the Schengen Area. However, Slovakia’s membership in these areas does not mean that the acceptance of the Canadian RTD or entry requirements confirmed for Slovakia automatically apply to other EU or Schengen countries.

The Embassy advised that travellers arriving from Canada will generally enter the Schengen Area through another country, such as Austria or Germany. Travellers should therefore separately confirm RTD acceptance and entry requirements with the authorities of the country where they first enter the Schengen Area.

The visa-exemption information is supported separately by information from the Slovak Ministry of Interior concerning the visa-free regime for recognized refugees holding a refugee travel document and residing in Canada. This information should not be attributed to the Embassy’s email confirmation.

Canadian RTD holders travelling to Slovakia should confirm the requirements of the first country of entry into the Schengen Area, particularly when travelling through another country from Canada.

Do not assume that Slovakia's confirmation of RTD acceptance automatically applies to another EU or Schengen country. Each country should be checked separately before travel.
