Spain is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Canadian Refugee Travel Document holders require a Schengen visa to visit Spain. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifically states that permanent residents in Canada who hold a Canadian Travel Document issued under the 1951 Refugee Convention must obtain a Schengen visa to visit Spain, regardless of nationality.

A Schengen visa application must be submitted to the country that is the traveller’s main destination, meaning the Schengen country where they will spend the most days. If the traveller will spend an equal number of days in two or more Schengen countries, the application should be submitted to the country of first entry into the Schengen Area.

Canadian Refugee Travel Document holders should obtain a Schengen visa before travelling to Spain when Spain is the main destination. If another Schengen country is the main destination, the application should be made through that country instead. If the traveller will spend an equal number of days in different Schengen countries, the application should be made through the country of first entry. Applicants should provide their valid Canadian RTD, proof of legal status in Canada, travel medical insurance, accommodation and travel itinerary, proof of sufficient financial means, and other required documents. Applicants must apply in person. Those living in British Columbia may also process their Schengen visa application through the Consulate General of Switzerland in Vancouver.
